Balls Bluff (1861/2011)

The Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership presents Of the Student, By the  Student, For the Student project  in conjunction with Ball’s Bluff Battlefield and seventh graders from Smart’s Mill Middle School in Loudoun County.  The program commences on January 25, 2011, and connects students directly to preservation needs at Ball’s Bluff Battlefield.

The Of the Student, By the Student, For the Student  program is a direct response to the mission of historical preservation.  We know that this generation of young people are products of a high-tech, media saturated world that may no longer be moved by stationary exhibits requiring thoughtful reading to digest.  In response, this service-learning project asks students to produce seven dynamic mini-movies that explore the stories and lessons of the Battle of Ball’s Bluff with youthful energy and honesty.  Students will choose the perspective for their story based on hands-on experiences at the historic site and analysis of primary source documents.  After playing the role of researcher, students will serve as photographers, writers, editors and choreographers during the production of their two- minute documentaries.  Once completed, student videos will be available to all Ball’s Bluff visitors.  The immediacy of the technology combined with a fresh perspective will hopefully serve to enrich the on-site experience for visitors of all ages.
