History: Segregation in Loudoun Co.
Friday February 03, 2012
The Loudoun Museum will host a lecture by Mr. Matthew Exline, entitled, "Segregated Public Education in Loudoun County, 1917-1968." Mr. Exline will examine two important phases of the local Civil Rights Movement: the political battles surrounding the building of Leesburg's Douglass High, and the long struggle to achieve the complete desegregation of Loudoun County's public schools. The presentation will use original thesis research to shed new light on a seldom-explored chapter of local history.
Matthew Exline graduated from Patrick Henry College in Purcellville, where he received Patrick Henry College's History Achievement award. In 2010 he directed a historical documentary for the Town of Leesburg in cooperation with the Thomas Balch Library, and has spoken at several conferences. He and his wife currently live in the Lynchburg area, where he is pursuing his MA in History at Liberty University.
