Michie Tavern

Historical Sites, Historical SitesRestaurantsCharlottesville, VA

The Proprietor Corporal William Michie was at Valley Forge when he received an urgent message to return home. Leaving behind the winter encampment, Michie commenced the tedious journey to Virginia only to learn upon his arrival that his ailing father had passed on.

The year was 1777 and it was a time for change, rebuilding and reorganizing in young William’s life. His father, “Scotch” John, had bequeathed a large parcel of land in Albemarle County. The Blue Ridge Mountains surrounded this region and, because it was so highly populated with deer, the area was dubbed Buck Mountain. The property was fed by a natural spring, and here William began building his Tavern by the side of the Buck Mountain Road.

Relocated in 1927, Michie Tavern is located ½ mile below Jefferson’s Monticello, accommodated travelers with food, drink, and lodging more than 200 years ago.

Servers in period attire offer bountiful Southern Midday Fare. The rustic restaurant setting renders a lunch dining experience rich in southern culture and hospitality for families to enjoy. Get a taste of the 18th-century as we feature a buffet of southern fried chicken, marinated baked chicken, hickory-smoked pork barbecue, stewed tomatoes, black-eyed peas, buttermilk biscuits and so much more.

After a leisurely lunch, guests may enjoy relaxed shopping in four unique shops – all housed in distinct historic structures. The Tavern Gift Shop, The Metal Smith Shop, The Artisan Shop and The General Store each provide a one-of-a-kind experience above and beyond plentiful shopping opportunities. Michie Tavern is open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Midday Fare is offered 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily, bringing the 18th-century building back to life

1784 Pub
In the Spring of 2019, you will be able to enjoy your favorite beverage in the 1784 Pub here at Michie Tavern.

We are making modifications to connect the oldest section of the Tavern to our existing dining room; renovations began January 2, 2019. Walls are being exposed that haven’t seen daylight in many years!

This expansion will not alter our normal dining operation. As our guests enjoy Virginia wine, brews or hard cider in the oldest section of Michie Tavern, a true 18th-century atmosphere will exist.

We will enhance the experience through education of not only our story but also the evolution of Virginia’s wine, beer and cider industry.
