This Original Burr Arch Truss Bridge was built between 1850 and 1860 and is located on Utica Mills Road over Fishing Creek in Frederick County, Maryland. This bridge is 100 feet long and was modified with steel stringers and a concrete pier creating 2 - 50 foot spans. The roadway width is 17.0 feet and the bridge is open to traffic. It is also called the Utica Mills Covered Bridge.
The Roddy Road, Loys Station, and Utica Bridges are three of only eight remaining covered bridges in the state of Maryland. At least 52 such structures once graced the landscape of the state; but storms, fires, and progress have claimed almost all of them. The three bridges provide a good comparative study of wood bridge truss techniques, as each displays a different truss design. The Utica Bridge has a Burr truss, named after Theodore Burr, who patented the design in 1817.
