Building America's Canals: Through Oct. 12 / 10 a.m-4 p.m.
Building
America’s Canals, an exhibit organized by the National
Canal Museum, takes place in the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical
Park, Trolley Barn Building in the Cushwa Basin at Williamsport. The
traveling exhibit blends science and history through hands-on activities
that allows children and adults to experience the marvel of canal engineering
first-hand.

Frederick MAYFEST: May 3 / 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Celebrate
spring as Downtown Frederick Partnership presents Mayfest! Wander from
shop to shop to restaurant listening to live music along the sidewalks
as you build a bouquet of spring flowers. Participating merchants will
offer a free flower to each person entering their stores while supplies
last, and children's activities throughout downtown. Stay for the evening
and enjoy First Saturday from 5-9 p.m. Downtown Frederick, Market, Patrick,

Ed Bearss Presents the "Battle of Buckland Mills":
May 5 / 7 p.m.
The Buckland Preservation Society will host a presentation by Chief
Historian Emeritus of the National Park Service and noted Civil War historian
and lecturer, Ed Bearss. The presentation, title "Battle of Buckland
Mills" will take place at the Battlefield and is made possible by
an American Battlefield Protection Program Master Planning Grant. Battlefield

This spectacular art show and sale is held in an equally
spectacular location, just outside Bluemont in a renovated stable with
views of the Loudoun Valley and beyond. Spend the day viewing the artwork,
enjoying wine tastings in Bluemont Vineyard's Tasting Room, participating
in the farm activities at Great Country Farms, walking through the charming
village of Bluemont, and browsing antiques in the Bluemont General Store.
All proceeds will benefit Friends of Bluemont, a nonprofit preservation

Designing the Parks Conference: May 20-22
A two-part conference
that examines the design of buildings and landscapes in regional, state
and national parks. Part 1: The History of Park Planning and Design will
take place in Charlottesville and is hosted by the University of Virginia.
The conference includes a guided field trip along the Journey Through
Hallowed Ground. Part 2: The Present and Future of Park Planning and
Design will take place in San Francisco, California. Omni Charlottesville & The

Pennsylvania
The New Gettysburg Visitor Center and Museum: Now / 8 a.m-6 p.m.
On April
14, the Museum and Visitor Center at Gettysburg National Military Park
opened its doors to visitors. The new 139,000 square foot facility features
a museum on Gettysburg in the Civil War, a 22 minute film entitled, “A
New Birth of Freedom,” Refreshment Saloon, Museum Bookstore, classrooms,
curatorial and administrative offices. The Grand Opening, including the
Cyclorama painting experience, is scheduled for September 26-28, 2008.
The project is funded by the non-profit Gettysburg Foundation, in cooperation

The Gettysburg Festival ~ Celebrating America: June 19-29
America’s
newest cultural festival, “The Gettysburg Festival
~ Celebrating America” is an extraordinary 10-day arts festival
presenting world-class artists and performers in a variety of free and
ticketed events. The festival celebrates American creativity in all genres
of the arts, including: Music (Brass, Jazz, Orchestral, Choral and Chamber),
Theater and Cabaret, Visual Art, Film, Dance, Culinary Arts and Children’s
Programming. This summer's festival will include two performances by
The Suzanne Farrell Ballet. The performances honor George Balanchine,
considered the “father of American ballet.” The Stars and
Stripes pas de deux (Balanchine/Sousa) is one of the pieces scheduled
to be performed by the company, under the artistic direction of Suzanne
