The
Exchange Hotel is a Civil War Medical Museum with a connection to railroad
history of central Virginia. There is an emphasis on the part played by
African Americans as Confederate Soldiers and hospital personnel, (nurses,
food purveyors, burial details, etc). During the war the Confederate Hospital
consisted of 125 acres with structures and tents for patient treatment,
ultimately treating 70,0000 patients (both Federal and Confederate) with
a death rate of less than 1%. The hospital grounds also had a Pest House
for the treatment of known infectious diseases, icehouse, blacksmith shop
and stables. The only buildings that remain from the Confederate Hospital
era are the hotel building and the summer kitchen. It also deals with the
history of Gordonsville and the Freedman’s Bureau that took over the
Hotel/Hospital after the Civil War ended in 1865.
