A Beautiful Photo Book Showcasing
“The Journey Through Hallowed Ground”

In the mid-seventeenth century, settlers from England and from Virginia's coastal plain began pushing beyond the fall line and into the Piedmont region of the Blue Ridge. This was the initial chapter in America's long, westward movement. The Piedmont, home to Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, and John Marshall, nurtured many of the architects of our revolution and Constitution. Many of the bloodiest and most critical battles of the Civil War were fought in the region.

Along the 175-mile stretch from Monticello to Gettysburg—designated by Congress as the official "birthplace of America"—intriguing details of our nation’s past emerge from every town and byway. This beautiful book, Journey Through Hallowed Ground Birthplace of the American Ideal, spotlights key places and personalities on the route, revealing insiders’ stories of early America.

Shhh…don’t tell the kids, but they may learn a thing or two about the history of the Hallowed Ground region even before the hot chocolate has had a chance to cool down.

In the mid-seventeenth century, settlers from England and from Virginia's coastal plain began pushing beyond the fall line and into the Piedmont region of the Blue Ridge. The Piedmont, home to Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, and John Marshall, nurtured many of the architects of our revolution and Constitution. Many of the bloodiest and most critical battles of the Civil War were fought in the region.

Thus, this land is truly "hallowed ground" for all who treasure our nation's past. In a wonderful work, historian Rudy Abramson with photographs by National Geographic cover photographer Kenneth Garrett and acclaimed photographer Jack Kotz, follows the history of the Old Carolina Road in Virginia from the early rivalries of Native American tribes, to the settlement of the region by our Founding Fathers, to the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. With insights from national historians and Pulitzer Prize winning writers set within the stunning photographs this book provides a vital insight into the sheer magnificence of the landscape, Where America Happened.
