Members of Mount Zion Baptist Church who lived in and around the African American neighborhood of Vinegar Hill founded Ebenezer Baptist Church on March 25, 1892. They first worshipped at the Daughters of Zion Hall at 4th and Commerce Streets in Vinegar Hill, then bought a lot and built a church in 1907 on Sixth Street in adjacent integrated Starr Hill. The current brick building dates to 1908. In the 1920s, the growing congregation purchased a lot at 411 8th Street and built a parsonage. Despite urban renewal that destroyed much of the Vinegar Hill neighborhood in the 1960s, many former residents continue to attend church there.
