Waterford, Virginia —A new one-year partnership has been created to
serve an area student: The Notre Dame Club of Gettysburg has teamed up with
the Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership (JTHG) to sponsor a middle
school student to attend the upcoming Extreme Journey Through Hallowed Ground
summer camp in Adams County, PA.
With registration quickly filling up for the June 15- 26 day camp, the Notre
Dame Club has donated the funds to ensure the fees set by the school system
are not a barrier for a child in the area interested in exploring the region
known as Where America Happened like few others have.
“For middle school kids who like outdoor adventures, working with high-tech
gadgets, and who have a passion for learning, the Extreme Journey Through Hallowed
Ground is the perfect experience,” said Dr. William Hall, Superintendent
of Schools for the Gettysburg Area School District. “It’s so much
fun that kids won’t even notice they’re learning.”
The Gettysburg Notre Dame Club scholarship student, like the other scholarship
students hosted by the JTHG Partnership, will not be known by name, even to
the camp counselors, as the financial position of any student is confidential.
All campers explore critically important historic sites throughout the JTHG
National Heritage Area that runs from Gettysburg to Monticello.
For two weeks, these students will view life through a different lens and
get the inside scoop from the experts. Archaeologists, authors, Park Rangers,
reenactors as well as multimedia specialists will share their passion and expertise,
taking students back in time, into the mind set of men and women during a crucial
time in our nation’s history. Students evaluate the roles of former leaders
as well as everyday citizens to understand the complexities of their lives
and then create original multimedia Vodcasts depicting the student’s
interpretation of “What leadership means to me.”
“It’s important for every young person to experience this very
special Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Heritage Area,” said
Jim Conrad, president of the Notre Dame Club of Gettysburg. “But even
more importantly, a child should not be denied because of their finances.”
Similarly, the JTHG Partnership has funded a limited number of scholarships
to ensure that the cost for the camp, which is set by each school system, is
not a barrier for interested youth.
“We transform traditional text-book learning for students of all economic
standings into a truly stimulating experience that exists only outside the
confines of the classroom,” said Cate Magennis Wyatt, president of the
Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership. “Coupling the latest technology
with creative curriculums, on-site visits, expert accounts, with the region’s
breathtaking landscapes, Extreme Journey will leave students riveted by the
past and ready to discover the future.”
This is the fourth year that the JTHG Partnership has offered the program.
The Adams County program runs from June 15- 26, 2009.
While space is limited, there are a few spots still available to Adams County
students, whether private, public or home schooled. For more information and
to register, go to: Extreme Camp Registration.
Educating teachers, students, citizens and visitors is one of the primary
objectives of the JTHG Partnership. Since its inception in 2006, this non-profit,
four-state, public-private partnership has developed and underwritten numerous
educational programs, including the highly acclaimed Extreme Journey camps
for middle school children, the high school Summer Enrichment Camp with the
University of Virginia, the high school programs for Loudoun County AP History
classes, the semester-long teacher certificate course taught through the Virginia
Community College System, and teacher workshops and semester courses for graduate
students at the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech.
