Rose
Hill Manor Park & Museums provides opportunities for field trips with
various themes related to Early American Life, Transportation and
Travel, and Agricultural Heritage. Teachers can select the theme
most appropriate for their students. Each tour is designed to provide
students with an understanding of life in the past, encourage consideration
of the differences and similarities with life today and provide hands-on
opportunities for students.

Programs We Can Do at Our Site:
All programs have been designed to complement the Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum. Specific standards are listed under each theme lesson plan.
Early Life in America/Maryland (General Museum Tour)
Students explore life in the past and discover the similarities
and differences to life in the 21st century. As they visit Federal
period mansion students will learn about Thomas Johnson, one of
our Revolutionary heroes and the first elected governor of Maryland.
In addition to learning about the household economy and the role
of each family member within it, students will be introduced to
early industry through exploration of textile and iron production.
Transportation and Travel in Early Maryland
Students will discover the importance of travel and the growth
of transportation systems in early Maryland. Rose Hill Manor lies
between several significant roadways which were important to early
industry and development. Students will learn about the movement
of goods and the development and technological improvements of
transportation systems in early Maryland as they explore the way
people and goods moved to and from Frederick.
Foodways
Students will learn about the use of natural resources and the
household economy. Rose Hill Manor was a working farm producing
most goods consumed by the household. Students will learn about
how food was grown and prepared in early Maryland, as well as other
various uses for plants such as medicinal and textile production.
Students will be encouraged to think about cultural influences
and draw comparisons between life in the 18th and 21st centuries.
Technology
Students will learn about the use and development of technologies
over times. From lighting to heat students will discover how residents
of Rose Hill Manor used technology in their everyday lives.
Pastimes and Recreation
Everyone needs to have fun. During this tour students will discover
the role of work and play in the lives of children in the 18th
and 19th centuries. Students will learn about early toys and compare
tools and toys of the past to those of today.
Pre-K
Students explore life in the past and discover the
similarities and differences to life in the 21st century through reading and
interaction. Using the story Charlie Needs a Cloak as a
backdrop, students will explore life and work in the 18th century.
Students will have the opportunity to become immersed in the story
as they participate in activities and learn about the use of natural
resources and production of clothing in the past.

Is there anything else we should know about
your site? Rose Hill Manor was built in the 1790s providing a
beautiful depiction of Federal period architecture. The property
was a working farm for nearly 200 years and was the final home of Maryland’s
first elected governor, Gov. Thomas Johnson. Part of one of the
original land tracts of Frederick County Rose Hill was settled in 1746.
The property includes the Rose Hill Manor House, Ice House, Blacksmith
Shop, Log Cabin, Carriage Museum, and Farm Museum buildings.
