| Located Fauquier County,
Virginia |
|
This site includes the postwar home and
grounds of Civil War partisan ranger leader Col. John S. Mosby, whose guerilla
tactics came to dominate the Civil War in northern Virginia during 1863-65.
The Spilman-Mosby House (“Brentmoor”) is a handsome Italianate
home on the main street of town where first a judge, then Mosby (1875-77),
then former Confederate officer and later Congressman and U.S. Senator Eppa
Hunton lived. It allows us to understand Mosby, postwar Virginia, and Warrenton’s
wartime and Reconstruction experiences better. Outbuildings and an archaeological
dig, as well as a shared visitor center, are on site.

SOLs: VS.7b, VS.8a, USI.9f, USI.10b, VUS.7c
A half-day experience designed to handle between one and three
classes simultaneously, and be teamed with another half-day site
visit. Currently, negotiations are underway with “Weston”,
a period plantation 8 miles from Warrenton, to provide a broader
view of the Civil War and Reconstruction in Fauquier County by
examining the local world before the war, and how the coming of
the war changed this rural paradise. This would provide the other
half-day component of a day-long Warrenton-based field trip
The Mosby Museum and Education Center’s program will include
:
-The Adventures of the Gray Ghost in Wartime Warrenton (at the
Visitor Center)
-Postwar Life of a Republican Confederate: Mosby at Brentmoor (in Mosby’s house)
-Archeology and 19th century Main Street Warrenton: What’s Beneath the
Brentmoor Property
Other Site Features of Interest to Students and Teachers
The Mosby Museum and Education Center sits in the historic district of
Warrenton, a paradise of Civil War-era architecture. It also features a
huge cemetery where Mosby, his family, and many Rangers are buried. The
church his family attended still stands nearby. Warrenton features a walking
tour with many Civil War sites, including Mosby sites. This town and county
is a fine microcosm of mid-19th century history. “Brentmoor” is
tied to the Mosby Heritage Area’s Historic Fauquier County Scavenger
Hunt—it is the first stop!

about your site? This site should begin to offer programs
on a limited basis in the Fall of 2007. As a new site, it is
quite interested in working with educators to provide relevant programs.
