Volunteer With JTHG

Boasting more than 10,000 listings on the National Register of Historic Places, The Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Heritage Area is a vibrant celebration of US history and culture, encompassing Native American settlements; French and Indian War, Revolutionary War, and Civil War battlefields; significant World War I and World War II sites; and locations connected to the struggle for Civil Rights. Without the invaluable contributions of its volunteer staff, however, the Journey would simply be a collection of historical sites. Some potential opportunities include:

  • Extreme Journey Summer Camp opportunities: Each summer, the Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership seeks local high schoolers to become Junior Counselors for our Extreme Journey Summer Camp. Ideal for students in need of volunteer or service leadership hours, Junior Counselors mentor campers as they uncover the "mysteries of history through espionage." Junior Counselors must be able to participate in physical activity, such as canoeing, hiking, biking and outdoor recreation, and possess moderate to advanced computer skills.
  • Research opportunities: As part of our Living Legacy Tree Planting Project, JTHG is recruiting volunteers to assist in primary source-based research on fallen Civil War soldiers. Open to researchers of all ages, this project requires individuals that are organized, detail-oriented, and computer literate. Volunteers are able to conduct research remotely, and are not required to work out of the Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership office.
  • Office Administration opportunities: The Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership office, located in Waterford, VA, is always looking for detail-oriented volunteers to help with our day-to-day operations. Tasks often include filing, processing large mailings, organizing databases, etc. Available projects vary on a daily basis, and are open to volunteers of any age.
  • Special Events opportunities: JTHGhosts numerous special events throughout the year, including our Annual Conference, Living Legacy Tree Planting Project dedication ceremonies, and book talks. The Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership is seeking organized and detail-oriented individuals that can come to our office in Waterford, VA. to assist in planning such events.

In addition to our organization's volunteer opportunities, the 350+ JTHG partner sites are also in need to project or event assistance.
