DATE AND TIME

April 11, 2021 1:30 pm April 11, 2021 3:00 pm

Hike your way to better health with The Healthy Adams County Physical Fitness Task Force’s guided, socially distanced Winter Fitness Hikes! These fully-guided hikes are open to beginner and seasoned hikers; we will take breaks as necessary and maintain a moderate group pace while maintaining appropriate social distance. Wear a mask for the gathering at the start. You may remove your mask if you like once the group is spaced out on the trail – at least 10 feet buffer space for people not in your household. Trails may be uneven or muddy. Please wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring a water bottle. Layered clothing is advised. Walks are held rain or shine.

In case of severe weather please check here.

Hike Information:

Monterrey Pass Battlefield From Gettysburg: Take Route 116 West through Fairfield to Route 16. Turn right onto Route 16 West and follow to Blue Ridge Summit. After crossing the railroad tracks, take a right onto Monterey Lane. Take this to the stop sign, and take a left onto Charmain Road. The parking lot and trailheads are about a half-mile down on the right. The hike will follow the battle lines of the Michigan Troopers during the Midnight Fight at Monterey Pass. We will proceed to Monterey Peak overlook, then down to the historic Maria Furnace Road, where most of the Confederate Army retreated following the battle of Gettysburg. This road was also part of the Great Philadelphia Wagon Road, the first colonial-era road leading west. The hike will end at the museum. The terrain is mostly mulch and stone dust trails, while Maria Furnace is an unused dirt road. Expect a steady climb of moderate grade to Monterey Peak overlook for about a mile. At the Peak, an optional .5 mile loop trail over unimproved, rocky terrain is also available. The total distance is approximately 2.3-2.8 miles.
