Welcome to the Of the Student, By the Student, For the Student Service Learning Program

The Of the Student, By the Student, For the Student™ Program is a nationally recognized and award-winning service-learning program that combines movie-making with on-site national history and authentic experiences to connect young people with American heritage like never before.

This groundbreaking project bonds students to the history and heritage found within their own back yards and the Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Heritage Area to help engage contemporary generations in understanding their own pasts – our nation’s past -- and making the vibrant stories of those who came before us real and relevant.
With professional guidance, students ranging from sixth to twelfth-grade serve as scriptwriters, production editors, photographers, choreographers, set designers, videographers to produce mini documentaries offering their depiction of American history.

The pilot program was created and customized by the JTHG Partnership for Harpers Ferry Middle School students in conjunction with Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation.

Now the program is working with other heritage sites within the Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Heritage Area, including Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello and Sutherland Middle School. Read our new Of the Student, By the Student, For the Student Monticello Blog.
