What does the SAG-AFTRA Strike mean for this event?

STATEMENT ON THE SAG-AFTRA STRIKE

The Journey Through Hallowed Ground (JTHG) is hosting the 30th anniversary celebration of the movie “Gettysburg” on October 13-15, 2023 against the backdrop of a strike by the Screen-Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA). JTHG wants to emphasize that we support unions and union members, and their right to strike for better working conditions. JTHG is not a “struck company;” we are a non-profit organization focused on promoting heritage tourism, history education and historic preservation, and we have no affiliation with any struck companies.

Autographs. We have received great interest from attendees about obtaining autographs during the anniversary celebration, and a number of signing sessions have been scheduled during the weekend. According to SAG-AFTRA guidelines regarding autograph signing sessions, actors may sign headshots, posters, or similar photos from the struck work. However, an actor cannot provide photos of themselves as a character from struck work. If a fan asks an actor to sign a photo with their character name or a quote from struck work, it is up to the actor’s discretion whether to comply with the fan’s request. Again, just to reinforce, Actors can sign photos, posters and other memorabilia related to “Gettysburg” as long as those items are provided by the fans and not by the actors themselves.

Panel discussions. We are working with the actors and their representatives to ensure that all actor appearances during the Gettysburg 30th weekend conform with SAG-AFTRA guidelines. What the actors will be able to discuss during our panels may be affected, as SAG-AFTRA does restrict their members from participating in the promotion of their work. They may not be able to talk about past, current, or upcoming projects – including addressing specific questions about the movie “Gettysburg,” which is considered to be “struck work” – but they will be able to talk about their backgrounds, hobbies and work outside of their film/tv careers. Some actors may simply choose to avoid talking about their specific work altogether. As for what can be discussed along these lines, SAG-AFTRA advises actors: “General topics are fine, such as about your process, why you wanted to be an actor, what you like/dislike about the industry, and the like are fine. You should avoid discussing characters you played on struck work or your work for struck companies.”

We are greatly looking forward to the weekend celebrating Director Ronald Maxwell and the actors and re-enactors from the greatest movie ever made about the defining battle of the Civil War. We are also celebrating you, the movie’s most devoted fans. If the strike is settled before the anniversary weekend, these restrictions on actor participation obviously will no longer apply. However, even if the strike is still in effect, weekend attendees should expect to have many opportunities to interact personally with the cast and crew, visit filming sites on the battlefield, and to share a truly memorable experience with fellow fans of the film.

I was an extra/reenactor in the film. Can I be guaranteed a ticket?

Unfortunately no. Tickets are sold out for the Saturday event, but there are still tickets available for the Friday and Sunday screenings.

Since its original release in 1993, Director Ron Maxwell has released a Director’s Cut of Gettysburg which features 17 minutes of compelling additional footage. Filmed at actual battle locations and full of authentic details, this rousing and soulful movie plunges you into the heat of the bloodiest battle fought on American soil. History comes alive with intense and spirited battles as well as the dilemmas, motivations, and fears of the leaders. Tom Berenger, Jeff Daniels, Martin Sheen and Stephen Lang star in this magnificent epic based on Michael Shaara’s Pulitzer Prize-winning The Killer Angels.

Gettysburg Directors Cut movie Poster

Join Director Ron Maxwell for the Premiere of the Director’s Cut of his film Copperhead, the story of Abner Beech, a stubborn and righteous farmer of Upstate New York who defies his neighbors and his government in the bloody and contentious autumn of 1862. Far from the Virginia battlefields whose names etch our history, the war of Copperhead visits the devastation and unimaginable loss of a civil war upon a family and a community whose strength and very existence are tested by fire, rope, knife, and betrayal. This is the Civil War come home. With Copperhead, director Ron Maxwell, who with Gettysburg and Gods and Generals established himself as our foremost cinematic interpreter of the American Civil War, takes on the War from a stunning and unexpected and richly, unforgettably humanist angle. The Director’s Cut features a re-edit and 10 additional minutes. A Director/Actor panel discussion will follow the film.
